The Bulgarska Koleda (Bulgarian Christmas), annual charity initiative, held under the patronage of President Georgi Purvanov to raise funds for medical treatment for seriously ill children, had raised a total of 1 516 185 leva by December 25 2009, news agencies said.

A special charity concert was held on December 25 2009 in Sofia’s Ivan Vazov National Theater. The concert was broadcast live on Bulgarian National Television (BNT) and was attended by Purvanov and a number of senior state officials and celebrities.

The money raised will go towards treating children at a number of children’s hospitals in the country. Any funds still left over after paying for the children's treatment will be used to buy specialist equipment for paediatric clinics in various cities in Bulgaria.

Last year the campaign raised 2 229 305 leva.

Overall, the previous six annual Bulgarska Koleda campaigns had raised 14 733 609 leva.

To support Bulgarska Koleda, an SMS sent to 1117 will mean a donation of one lev (1.20 with VAT) to the charity campaign that continues until December 31 2009.
