There is a danger of avalanches in Bulgaria’s mountain resorts, the Mountain Rescue Service said on December 24 2009.

The weather was unsuitable for hiking given the short daylight hours, the service said, according to a report by Dnevnik quoting Bulgarian news agency BTA.

People going from place to place, for example from one mountain hut to another, should be careful to allow enough time to do so.

Icy paths should be avoided and winter route markings carefully heeded.

Daytime temperatures were above freezing and there was little wind in the mountains. Separately, weather forecasters said that temperatures would be higher than usual for the season.
