Bulgarian police who aided criminals to be targeted in ‘Insolents 3’

Bulgaria should be looking out for the sequel to the series of arrests of alleged members of a kidnapping gang. "The Insolents 3" will see arrests of current and former police who had helped the gang, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said.

Investigators were looking at specific people to be netted in the forthcoming operation, Tsvetanov said.

Unfortunately, the Interior Ministry was not immune to "such elements" in its ranks, he said. The first two operations against "The Insolents" had worked because advance information about the busts had been kept hermetically sealed in a close circle.

Tsvetanov said that the incomes and business dealings of all those detained so far had been checked to provide leads for further investigation and arrests.

On December 22 2009, five people were arrested in the "Insolents 2" operation, bringing to a reported 30 the total number of suspects held. Sofia City Court remanded the five in custody without bail.

Tsvetanov said that after the most recent arrests, the gang was out of business, although investigations were continuing.

Speaking to journalists on December 23, he said that in co-operation with the Ministry of Justice, there would be an investigation of the prison system which had allowed inmates out of custody to work.

Previously, it was reported that at least one suspect had worked for the gang while "on leave" from prison.
