Teachers are the only public servants in the country who will receive a 13th salary, Education Minister Sergei Ignatov was quoted by Bulgarian news agency BTA  on December 19 2009.

Reportedly, the details pertaining to that resolution were reached "a few days ago" during a meeting with Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov. Subsequently, letters were sent to all Bulgarian municipalities and schools informing the appropriate authorities of the decision.

"The 13th salaries were part of the budget delegated for the schools across the country" Ignatov was quoted as saying. He went on to say that the teachers "really deserved the bonus" because they were "utterly committed to building a new Bulgaria".

Currently, the average teachers' salary was about 700 leva, although increases are being discussed, Ignatov said.
In light of the global economic downturn the Education Ministry had been allocated the best possible budget for 2010, Ignatov said, mainly due to the tenacious efforts of Yordanka Fandukova, who was the Education Minister at the time.

Fandukova, a former school headmistress and Education Minister from the ruling Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria, (GERB) became Sofia's first woman mayor, winning 66.1 per cent of the vote in November 2009.

To get what they deserve, they will need the wherewtihal, the savvy, the skills to go to another country which will recdognize their qualifications and pay them the salary congruent with their professional expertise.

well done to the teachers but please pay them a good salary all year round they deserve it.

Yes, they DO deserve it and I'm happy to see them get it. I suspect the others have been getting theirs all year long, so no-one notices

700 leva? Maybe close to 450-500. But it is definitely not 700 leva for an average monthly salary for teachers. At least, not outside Sofia. Glad they got the bonus salary, because they deserve it.
