Bulgaria covered by snow, more expected

All of Bulgaria is coated in snow, while in the south-eastern part of the country, it is still raining though later today and into the night, the region will see snow as well, the meteorological institute said.

Average temperatures in Bulgaria on the morning of December 18 2009 were between -2 and -7C. The thickness of the snow cover varies considerably. In Sofia it is about eight cm while in Novo Selo it is 32cm, 23cm in Vidin, and about 15cm in Montana.

Sustained snowfall will continue on most mountains, accompanied by strong winds, predominantly from the south-east, at about 14m a second, the report says.

On the summit of Cherni Vruh, on Vitosha Mountain south of Sofia, there is reportedly 44cm of snow. Winds of more than 24m a sec, or 84km/hour were recorded at Mussala Summit in Rila Mountain.

The Mountain Rescue Service (PSS as abbreviated in Bulgaria) said that conditions are unfavourable for mountaineering or tourism.

The Road Infrastructure agency closed the Rousse-Byala road as of 1.15am on December 18, and reportedly the section is still shut to traffic.

Most major roads in Bulgaria are negotiable, but strong caution is advised because of the snow and severely reduced visibility.

The traffic police in Pernik (KAT) told Bulgarian news agency BTA that it currently takes two hours to reach Sofia from Pernik, about 30km to the west.

Public transport in Sofia is experiencing difficulties and delays are common.

Trolleybuses number 6 in Sofia’s west boroughs of Lyulin have been redirected to the line of trolleybuses number 7. Additionally, trolleybuses number 2 are making a detour, avoiding Todor Kableshkov Str because of the street’s steep slope which cannot be safely negotiated by the vehicles.

Snow clearing vehicles have been deployed across Sofia.

Dnevnik daily said that Titan had been delayed with the snow clearing operation because it was not until 3am that Sofia Municipality told them that their services were required.
