Heavy snowfall and strong winds to descend over Bulgaria

The weather forecast for Bulgaria for the evening of December 17 and December 18 is for sustained snowfall and high winds, the Bulgarian meteorologic institute announced on December 17 2009.

Heavy snowfall is expected throughout most of the country while the southwest of Bulgaria, along the Struma river gorge, will see heavy rain. However, due to the constant drop of temperature, snow cover in the north of Bulgaria will progressively accumulate, as it will in the mountains. Rain will eventually give way to snow in the south as well.

Moderate sustained winds will prevail in the valleys, but along Bulgaria's coastline northern winds will be significantly stronger. In the mountains, winds will also be intense as two fronts collide over Bulgaria, a cold one descending from the northeast and a milder one from the Aegean Sea and Greece, the meteorologic institute said.

On average across the country temperatures will slump to lows of between -10C and -5C and highs of between 0C and 3C.

Mountainous regions will be subjected to heavy snowfall, with wind reaching storm intensity from the southwest along the ridges, while southeasterly winds will prevail through the cols.

Snowfall will be prominent along the northern Black Sea while rain will prevail in the south, which overnight will turn to snow as well.

Motorists are particularly advised to take care as conditions deteriorate significantly over the next 24 hours.
