About 60 million euro will be invested in the development and installation of a gas grid network connecting Bulgaria, Serbia and Turkey, Dnevnik daily reported on December 17 2009.

The sum is earmarked under the Regional Development programme, while the network infrastructure is poised to link the grid of Bulgaria and Serbia to the west, as well as Bulgaria and Turkey to the east, Deputy Minister of Regional Development Lilyana Pavlova, in charge of the programme, was quoted as saying by Bulgarian media.

Until recently, the funds were allocated for the construction of a similar network between Bulgaria and Greece, interlinking both countries' gas-grid systems. The European Commission said, however, that the Greek-Bulgarian project may not be funded simultaneously by both European programmes, and since it is already funded by the Rehabilitation and Development programme, the 60 million euros from the Regional Development programme has to be redirected to alternative infrastructure projects.

The Ministry of Economy and Energy has until 2013 to negotiate and process the contract for the construction of the infrastructure, which is when the six-year funding cycle designated by the EC expires and a new one is launched.

"Preparations for such projects necessitate a considerable amount of time," Pavlova said. In the case of the Bulgarian-Turkish section, the project is complicated by the fact that the equipment poised to be installed is designated for Turkey, while the funds from the Regional Development programme themselves are supposed to be destined for Bulgaria, Pavlova said.
