Cigarette maker British American Tobacco will part ways with its Bulgarian distributors, BAT Bulgaria said on December 16 2009.

A source close to the company said the move would leave more than 110 people jobless, with a further 70 related to distribution losing their jobs subsequently.

The decision is based on the poor shape of the Bulgarian economy, BAT said. BAT Bulgaria’s management have reviewed their business model that is currently based on direct distribution.

A new model has been introduced from mid-December based on a network of independent wholesalers and existing local distribution companies. During these partnerships, BAT will continue to sell its Viceroy, Kent and Pall Mall brands on the market.
