Five people were killed in the last 24 hours in heavy traffic accidents across Bulgaria in what Bulgarian Traffic Police (KAT) attribute to both reckless driving and deteriorating road conditions, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik said on December 16 2009.

A total of 28 collision were recorded in the country, not including Sofia, with 34 injured, of which two were in critical condition, KAT said. In Sofia alone, 100 light and six serious collisions were reported in which seven people had been injured.

Traffic police said theShipka Pass in the Stara Planina, large swathes of the Hemus motorway, the Vitinya tunnel, the Rishkia Pass, the Malka Burzia - Berkovits road section, Omurtag - Kotel, and the area around Koznitsa were heavily affected by fog.

In spite of reduced visibility in many regions most major roads had been cleared of snow, although in the mountains many roads were still covered in ice and snow. Partial ice cover on the roads was still found around Varna, Smolyan, Svishtov and Samokov.

KAT have also warned motorists of potential landslides at the Toyan - Kurnare section, the Iskar and Kresensko gorges, as well as the Sofia - Samokov, Assenovgrad - Smolyan, Mezdra - Blagoevgrad, and Belitsa-Zagrazden road sections.

Additionally, lorries with freight were not allowed to operate across the Petrohan pass, the Batak - Dospat, Velingrad - Surnitsa and the Belovo - Yundula road sections, and the Predel mountain pass.

Finally, the mountain passes Troyan - Kurnare, Tvurditsa - Elena, Etropole-Zlatitsa, the Vurbishki pass and the road from Shipka to Buzludja, as well as Aksakovo-Kitchevo were all closed for traffic.
