Police arrest masked men who burgled home of UK woman in Sevlievo

Masked men broke into the house of a British woman in the village of Kruvenik, municipality of Sevlievo and robbed her. Less than an hour later, however, the police apprehended the culprits, Focus news agency reported on December 11 2009.
Gabrovo police said that at about 0.40am on December 11, a 43-year-old British woman called reporting that masked men had broken into her house. Reportedly, they threatened her, forced her to the floor, and tied her up. They stole a Samsung television set, mobile phone and her purse containing her passport and money worth about 500 leva, both in Bulgarian and foreign currency.
A police patrol was sent to the scene and a hunt was launched to catch the burglars.
Less than an hour after the woman sent her distress call, a police patrol stopped a Citroen with the three suspects inside, aged 20, 21, and 25, all of them from Gabrovo in central Bulgaria. The police found the woman's television set in the vehicle.
The police said that the investigation was continuing. The three men will likely face charges of robbery and, if convicted, could be sentenced to between three and 10 years in jail.

I live in the Gabrovo region and i am not surprised to hear of such a crime.
Our house was burgled 2 years ago as well as another 20-30 in the same area, the police never found the burglers and they actually sent us a letter saying they stopped the investigation as we left the country, it was news to me, i have not left the country for more than 3 years!

If the lady was robbed by professionals, it would have been a different story.
I still leave my doors unlocked, my cars spend most of their time outside the entrance gates and i feel very relaxed although i do have two guns, a stun gun, 4 big dogs, and various other objects for self defence around the house - so they could get a run for their money if they came back to my place.
My advice is to be prepared but dont dwell on the fact that you could be unlucky enough to get robbed, crime is still low here and i feel safer than what i did in the UK.
Put security stickers on your house and get a couple of dogs, this will usually be enough to deter anybody.

Sorry Mikael,you are wrong. A single persons unemployment benefit is 30lev per month,enough to buy a little bread each day. State pension is 90 lev each month. Many employers are not paying their employees anything. Even my own brother who is course manager at St Sofia golf club has not been paid for nearly 3 months. His workers have not been paid also,and now sit in cold houses without electricity. I stand by my words Mikael,"expats in Bulgaria be very carefull". By the way Mikael, crime in Sofia has gone through the roof this summer.
Work for 50 lev a month? Is not the Bulgaria social welfare system paying a minimum of 200 lev a month?

For Gods sake Woody, take heed to this advice anywhere you are in the world. So yes the woman was lucky in it appears that the motive was robbery, however, remember why one of the reasons for living in Bulgaria was to get away from the daily occurences in the UK of cowardly attacks on law abiding citizens in their own homes and wet behind the ears "special constabularies" who were powerless to do anything and 9 times out of 10 too damn scared to! Read the full comment the scene and 1 hr later the culprits are caught, seems everyone likes to put down Bulgaria and its corrupt procedures, yet never publicly admire this country's enforcement when it is expedited in a most expedient manner!
I am suprised there are no comments for this article. Most of my familly live in the Varna ,Balchik and sunny beach area. They live in the villages that supply workers for these resorts, the people dependant on the resorts are being paid nearly nothing ,just food to take home and 50 lev a month this summer. There will be some very desperate people this winter. I dont want to scare you,but please be carefull.
