Registration of internationalised European domain names started

Thu, Dec 10 2009 17:57 CET 2133 Views
The European registrar of the .eu domain, EURid, opened registration for domain names using full Latin Cyrillic and Greek alphabets, EURid announced on December 10 2009.

In the first hour after registration opened, 38 172 domain names were registered.

"The significant number of registered names during the first hour shows how important it is for people across Europe to be able to access and use the internet in their own languages" EURid general manager Marc Van Wesemael was quoted as saying in a company media statement.

Most internationalised .eu domain names were registered in Germany in the first hour, followed by the Czech Republic and France.

In October 2009, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) approved the creation of country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) and a few weeks later, Bulgarian registrar Register.bg announced it would accept registration of .bg domain names in Cyrillic, ahead of a full-fledged Bulgarian .бг country-code.

Registration of a .eu domain in full Latin, Cyrillic or Greek is possible through any accredited registrar, a list of registrars is available at www.eurid.eu/en/eu-domain-names/registrar-list.
