Emilia Maslarova, Member of Parliament for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), who was accused of embezzlement during her time in office as social minister, was removed from her post as chairperson of the Parliamentary committee on labour and social policy, Bulgarian media said on December 9 2009.

Maslarova was removed with 112 votes in favour from the ruling Citizens for the European Development of Bulgaria (abbreviated as GERB in Bulgarian) party, the right-wing Blue Coalition and ultra-nationalist Ataka party.

In protest at Maslarova's removal, the BSP announced it would withdraw all its MPs from leadership positions of all Parliamentary committees.

Former prime minister and BSP leader Sergei Stanishev said Maslarova's removal was absurd. The motion to remove Maslarova was filed by the Blue Coalition, saying it was not moral for an MP under investigation for embezzlement of public funds, and who had been stripped of her immunity from prosecution, to continue as a committee chairperson.

Earlier in November, Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev asked MPs to strip Maslarova of her immunity from prosecution which she had under Bulgarian law as an MP. Maslarova voluntarily renounced her immunity before the matter was tabled for debate.

After she was axed from her post, Maslarova said she would also leave the committee altogether instead of staying on as a commitee member on the BSP quota.

SAVE TIME - STRIP IMMUNITY FROM ALL MP'S (WHY SHOULD THEY HAVE IT IF THEY ARE INNOCENT PEOPLE)THEN PROSECUTE ALL bsp MEMBERS PAST AND PRESENT. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM IS GUILTY AS HELL OF CORRUPTION AND COVER-UP. THEY BECAME MEMBERS TO LINE THEIR OWN POCKETS AND HAVE ALL DONE VERY NICELY OUT OF IT

Stanishev thinks it is absurd to remove her but is really absurd is her not automatically stepping down. These people can no longer tell the difference between right and wrong.
