Konstantin Dimitrov, from the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, part of the Blue Coalition, has been appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Focus news agency reported on December 7 2009.

This is a return to a position Dimitrov held in 1998 during the cabinet of former prime minister Ivan Kostov. In his most recent appointment, Dimitrov was declared Deputy Minister, a position which was made vacant by Krasimir Kostov, on November 27 2009, after the latter was alleged to have been previously involved in intelligence-gathering services of the former Bulgarian communist party. Kostov himself hails from the ruling GERB party.

Dimitrov has confirmed his new position as Deputy of Foreign Affairs but refused to disclose any further information surrounding his position.

"I am a professional in the field of foreign policy and diplomacy, thus I will refrain myself from making any preliminary statements," he said as quoted by Dnevnik daily on December 8.

In 1988, Dimitrov taught English at the English department within the Sofia Technical University, a position he held until 1992. He then went on to become an expert in the department of "western European and North American matters" within the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Later, in 1998, he became Deputy Foreign Affairs minister in Kostov's cabinet, and in 2000 he led Bulgaria's mission in Nato and was the country's ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg until 2002.

In 2004, Dimitrov was among the founding members of the Democrats for a Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, becoming a member of parliament in 2005 and serving as deputy chair of the foreign affairs committee. In January 1, 2007, Dimitrov received a European Parliament member status.
