One of the most successful Bulgarian films in recent years, Dzift (Дзифт), by director Yavor Gurdev, has drawn the attention of Hollywood, Bulgarian broadcaster Avtora.com said.

The broadcaster quotes Alexandar Donev, director of the National Film Center, as saying that an American film company had requested to buy out the rights for a remake.

"The negotiations have been underway for almost a year now, but we are finally approaching the finish," Donev was quoted as saying.

Dzift, based on Vladislav Todorov's novel of the same name, is a black-and-white, neo-noir, black comedy about Moth, who was wrongly convicted of murder just before the Bulgarian communist coup in 1944, but who is released on parole and finds himself in the alien world of totalitarian Sofia of the 1960s.

In May 2009, cable network HBO had already bought the rights to broadcast the Bulgarian film in several counties. Although the film has won a long series of awards and each screening is a success, including in the US, Americans found it hard to understand Bulgarian reality and so American producers would create their own version of the film, Donev said.

It was not yet known who would play in the Hollywood version, Avtora.com said.

Dzift has won a long string of awards, the most recent being the Best Foreign Film award at the Salerno festival in Italy on December 7 2009.

Also, it hasn't been all that long since they switched their form of government... Unfortunately the Bulgarian people have more to worry about than the film industry, but they're doing an excellent job, considering.

Good luck. Bulgarian films are great because they're not like America where films are a dime a dozen. The film industry isn't huge there like it is in some other countries so when they create a film, it MEANS something, it speaks, and it's very... Bulgarian. I had the excellent opportunity to meet Milena Andonova (director of Monkies in Winter) when I visited Bulgaria a few years ago, and she spoke on this matter. According to her, the movies are considered amazing because of the facts I stated above, but that doesn't mean the whole world is in love with [...]

Read the full comment them. In the case of Dzift, however, I am not sure, as it has been approved of all over. Perhaps not Holland, however.

If there are such good movies made in Bulgaria, why do not we see them in Holland. Not in cinemas not on tv not on dvd. The Bulgarian industry should work on it. I would like to give them a hand if necessary.
