A Turkish construction worker fell to his death on December 7 2009, Bulgarian media reported.

The 35-year-old-man was employed at the Turkish company Nova Tech, which conducts construction work at the Serdika Mall in Sofia.

According to Dnevnik daily, the man, a native of Istanbul, was fitting a window when he plunged 30 metres from a scaffold and died instantly.

Nova Tech, the main construction company on the site, employs about 1300 workers, all of them Turkish nationals. Bulgarian media reported that his colleagues were not proficient in Bulgarian and were unable to give evidence to the police once the officers arrived, so an interpreter had to be called in.

The man’s identity has not been disclosed by the police.

There were no other casualties in the incident, Dnevnik said.

What a tragedy. Unfortunately, there is little or no incentive for contractors to improve safe systems of work and the provision of appropriate access systems, etc. is often more expensive than the likely costs of fatalities. I think current BG legislation stipulates 10,000 BGN per fatality.
