About 1300 clunkers to be removed from Sofia streets

A total 1300 clunkers have been labelled by Sofia city hall inspectors with special stickers, earmarking the cars for removal, Sofia city hall said in a statement on December 7 2009.

According to regulations, should the owners fail to remove the cars voluntarily, the municipality will have the cars towed to a specially-designated car park for a period of two weeks.

Owners that want their cars returned will have to pay fines ranging from 150 leva to 500 leva, while company cars stand to be fined between 700 leva and 2000 leva. Should owners fail to claim the car during this period or be unwilling to pay the fines, the car would be scrapped.

Sofia municipality said that owners of old or disused cars should remove the clunkers voluntarily, then have it scrapped and receive financial compensation for it.

City hall inspectors began their sweep of Sofia streets on October 26, expecting to find about 450 disused cars for removal, but the number of clunkers they found was much higher.

Are you sure the inspectors were doing there job being fully awake? or did they take bribes for closing their eye's? They probably missed another few thousand cars or have only inspected a small part of Sofia. Walking the streets in Liulin for example show about the number they came up with.

They did something similar several years ago and yet I never saw any of them removed

"Clunker" is an everyday word in the US for such a car.

Clunker! There is a good old American word for a car that won't run...Keep up the good work. Disused? Who made that word up? Try using the word abandoned (or discarded). At any rate, it is high time that something be done about these cars that clog the streets and sidewalks. Now do something about the stray dogs!

where did you find this word 'clunker'?
If you're looking for a word to describe an old car then try 'banger'.

Very good, it is high time to give more parkingspace for cars which are in use.
