Editorial: Commissioner for what?

Fri, Dec 04 2009 09:59 CET 2510 Views
If the European Parliament gives its approval, the new European Commission will take office some time around February 2010, with Bulgaria’s Roumyana Zheleva in the International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

However much Zheleva and some others have tried to drum up enthusiasm and respect for the post conferred by European Commission President Jose Barroso, it is understandable that the fact of being given a portfolio that is lightweight and may prove to be merely a subordinate role to another commissioner is a sign of, at very least, a lack of confidence in Bulgaria.

If she and the rest of the commissioners-designate are confirmed in office, the main task ahead will be to help steer the Lisbon Treaty-era EU ahead in difficult times; and for Zheleva, to produce a performance that may help – along with other efforts by Bulgaria – get a somewhat more significant portfolio for the country in the EC of 2014.
