2.8M Bulgarians overweight

According to the National Statistic Institute (NSI), 2.8 million Bulgarians suffer from obesity.

Men are more obese then women, with 56.7 per cent of the male population against 43 per cent of the female population being classified as obese, NSI said.

The average Bulgarian male was said to be 175cm tall and 79kg, while the average woman was 163cm and 66kg.

Reportedly, 39.2 per cent of Bulgarian men and 13.5 per cent of the women above the age of 15 said they exercise "heavily", including regular cycling, aerobics, weight lifting or physical manual labour, amounting to about 15 and eight hours a week, respectively for both genders. On the other hand, moderate physical exercise was performed by 65.5 and 54.7 per cent of men and women, respectively.

The report said that towards the end of 2008, 40.5 per cent and 18.9 per cent of men and women in the country above the age of 15 smoked an average of 14 cigarettes a day.

One third of Bulgarian males said they consumed alcohol every week, while 10.4 per cent said they consumed alcohol on a daily basis.

Only 2.1 per cent of women admitted they drank daily, NSI said.
