European Union justice and home affairs ministers have given the go-ahead for citizens of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia to be allowed to travel to the Schengen zone without visas from December 19 2009, a move that Bulgaria was among the first to welcome.

The decision, which applies to citizens of the three Western Balkans countries who have biometric passports, is widely seen as a step towards the countries’ European integration.

When the change takes effect, visitors to EU Schengen area member states from Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro will be allowed to stay for up to 90 days within a six-month period.

Bulgaria welcomed the decision, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said in Brussels, where he was attending the ministers’ meeting.

Bulgarians were exempted from Schengen visa requirements in 2001, and the country joined the EU in January 2007.

Serbian president Boris Tadic described his country’s entry to what is called the "Schengen white list" as a first step towards Serbia’s EU integration. He said that Serbia would begin its EU membership negotiations as soon as possible.

The visa liberalisation decision does not apply to Kosovo, which in February 2008 unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, a move that is being scrutinised in international court.

It also does not apply to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania, which failed to meet Schengen visa liberalisation criteria. These requirements include benchmarks for passport security, border controls and fighting corruption and organised crime.

EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said that the abolition of visa requirements for Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia was a big step toward the EU integration of the three countries.

"The Council decision is historic and strengthens the links between the three countries and the EU. Citizens from these three countries wishing to celebrate Christmas with their friends and relations in the Schengen area can now do so without needing visas," Tobias Billström, minister for migration and asylum policy of Sweden, holder of the EU presidency, said.

The decision was marked at a ceremony in Brussels on November 30 2009 with the countries’ ministers for the interior and Sweden’s Billström. Ministers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania also attended.

In Skopje, Macedonia’s foreign ministry welcomed the decision, Macedonian daily Utrinski vesnik said, according to a report by Bulgarian news agency Focus on December 1.

"The liberalisation of the visa regime is a big and practical acquisition, which will give the opportunity for higher mobility, exchange of ideas, development of co-operation in all fields of public life and as a catalyst for the process of Europeanisation of Macedonian society.

The development is very important for the young generations because they are carrying the development of Macedonia into a future EU member state," the foreign ministry was quoted as saying

Macedonian prime minister Nikola Gruevski described the decision as historic and as confirmation of the country’s reform process.

"We have reason to celebrate and this day will be written in Macedonian history for sure," Gruevski said.

Thats where you are quite wrong Peter. Our Macedonian language is a part of western Bulgarian and despite your rejections has always been integral in the grammatic make up of our languege. Linguists, and politicians have known for a long time and all can express their arguments but what has remained concrete is that those who hold themselves to be Bulgarian speaking Macedonians in Greece have been the key for many anthropologists to reveal the local syntax of its speakers. The more north you go in Macedonia the more serbian you find in the dialects while retaining their central Bulgarian [...]

Read the full comment gramma. It was not an accident when our president Gligorov in the early 90s said to his Bulgarian counterpart after much disagreement that yes it is true that our languages are mutually intelligable. When our former PM Georgievski visited Bulgaria he always stressed the Bulgarian mother tongue in our Macedonian. Even then Peter Georgievski was openly (to dismay of the right wing) teaching us when I was a kid at school that our language stemmed from Bulgarian. So as you see Peter our ethnicity for us Macedonians is Bulgarian while our nationality is Macedonians. While there are Macedonians of many ethnicities e.g. Bulgarian, Greek, Vlach, Turkish, Albanian, Roma, Pomak there is only one nationality in the Balkans which is Macedonian and that is us.
Thankyou, I also wish you a happy festive season.

Long Live the Macedonian Youth & SDSM.

Anonymous Peter Thu, Dec 24 2009 18:23 CET

Sasha, the Ethnicity and language is purely Macedonian, has nothing to do with the Bulgarian language.Do you know what the high ranking Greek representative said in 1925 at the League of Nations? "The Macedonian language is neither Serbian nor Bulgarian, but a distinct Macedonian language and ethnicity". You see, your propaganda holds no water.Once more,I wish you happy holidays!

Anonymous Sasha Wed, Dec 23 2009 04:44 CET

Correction Peter your nationality is Macedonian and your language is a Bulgarian dialect like many of us which speak it throughout Macedonia today. You are about as ethnically Macedonian as an American is ethnically American which means you just as the Americans only citizens of a nation. We are all Macedonians of a Slavic ethnicity which belong to Bulgarian. Now whether being a Slav bothers you is a mute point because by virtue of customs, language, and traditions you have been so created. You should be proud of your Slavic background and stop this foolish, idiotic separation of Slavic from [...]

The Slavs have always been a proud people and we will always remain proud regardless whether you like it or not Peter so grow up or does it take my teenage youth to instill some common sense into you and your diaspora antiquisationists. Long Live the Macedonian Youth & SDSM.

To all of you Greeks who dont understand the differance between ethnicity and language. My ethnicity is Macedonian,my language is Slavic, same as all other Slavic speaking people in Europe. Are you capable to read the differance?.On the words of dulos and sklavos,I understand it this way;Doulos would be when one person is working for someone with or without being paid,Sklavos means, you are imprisoned. When a person is sent to preason,he is sklavomenos.I am not Greek,I am Macedonian but,I do know a bit of the language.

Bulgarian Maedonians?

What the hell dude? You will start making your own race of people. There are Macedonians who still live in Bulgaria. They are etnic Macedonians, like the ones that still live in Greece, etnic Macedonians. The speak Macedonian language! Speaking the Macedonian language, does not make you Slavinc. OF COURSE there is some "slavic mix" in our blood. The same is with Greek,Serbs,Croatinas,Bulgarians...antient slavic people came and started living on the whole Balkan. Its naiv to put strict border and to say: they came till Macedonia, and not further south.

The nations got(and they still do) mixed up that much that they are beyon recognition. Especially small nations (few milions). You cant expect after more than 2000 years everything to be the same in one nation's culture, religion, language..
After all, Greece was not a country during Aleksandar's time, there were ciries and regions. Each of them with different customs dialekts, even languages. Mixing those cities, Afrikan ones, Tukish and Slavic made you what you are today. Just read the statistic of your blood DNA and you will see what you are. You can lie but you blood cant!

Of course you are Slavs Peter just like the Serbs, Croats, Slovaks, Poles. You have always been Slavs Peter just because you use a regional toponym does not make you any less Slav. Just as we are Greeks of Macedonian background so are you Slavs (many of the Slavs in Greece say they are Bulgarian macedonians) with a Macedonian regional background. It will eventually make sense to you when everyone around you is speaking Yugoslavica Makedonski. I mentioned before something about DNK analysis about which nation has truly descended from the antic Macedonians..
http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?t=143319
Before saying that this is "ANOTHER PROPAGANDA" check who is IGENEA in this world (sorry but the universe is not rolling around greece)
http://www.igenea.com/index.php?content=132&st=178

I will quote:

Today’s Macedonians are descendants of the Antic Macedonians, says research results from the Swiss Genealogy Institute iGENEA. For a second time an independent research institution confirms what Oxford and Madrid University confirmed a [...]

Read the full comment decade ago.

iGENEA is the most famous global Genealogy institute who once again frustrated the Greek government by confirming the direct connection between the Macedonians today and in Antic times.

The question came from a Greek citizen who asked iGENEA the following question: "What are the roots of today SlavMacedonians".

The Institute responded: "Before all, they are Macedonians, not slavMacedonias as you referred to them for political reasons. The largest part of the Macedonians are direct descendants of the Antic Macedonians. Only a minor portion have a Slavic connection".

iGENEA backed up their findings with hard numbers. However, tying the today's Macedonians with Antic Macedonians is not the only disappointing information for Greece. According to iGENEA, only 32 percent of Greek citizens have Macedonian, Hellenic and even Arab origin. iGENEA further explains that 31 percent of Greek citizens have Celtic roots, 12 percent Germanic and Slavic origin, while 11% have Illyrian roots.

iGENEA also negated the Illyrians roots of the Albanians. In stark contrast to Albanian beliefs, IGENEA says the Albanians have the least Illyrian roots. Only 20 percent of the Albanians have Illyrian roots, while 40 percent of today’s Bosnians have Illyrian roots.

In the past several months, the iGENEA Genealogy Institute had been flooded with requests by Greek Citizens who, ironically, did not care for their own origin, but all questions were aimed at the Macedonians' origin. iGENEA in its research uses DNK analysis, historical, archeological, and anthropological sources.

Read the full comment did something like that. For god's sake people, I know you can be nationalist (every one can), but dont you think that something is wrong in claiming the right of calling yourselfs Macedonia? Its not that we are nationalist like you are saying all the time, but calling us by name that doesnt make any sence(fyromian) is wridicilous. What kind of name is that? What is my nationality according to you..let me gues..former yugoslavian republic of macedonian????????????
This name is just confirming that our country once was part of a big country called Yugoslavia, and that we are Macedonians. Try reading it the whole sentance, not just FYROM!!!
I am really sick of nationalistick thinking and blind eyes.
I really wish that this problem will be solved one day..dont worry we dont want the greek part of macedonia back,we just want to stop whi bullsht once and for all, and my nationon to be claimed like it deserves.
PS:After one DNK research of the ppl of Republic of Macedonia nad ppl of Greece was made, it was concluded that Macedonians(we) have most of the ancient macedonians % in our dnk then greece around 40% if I am not mistaking. Greece ppl has around 10% (i gues coz of the raping of Aleksander and his soldiers lol :)) ). The test was made by Engish scientist. I ll try to find that video and post it here. But ofcourse you ll say it is again propaganda. Like we have that much money to give to those scientist to set up the research...

Well,
I think it's bigger than that. Even if a bunch of Makedonians attend school or visit Greece, it doesn't mean much because their country is essentially poor, and that's because the rest are not free to associate and take advantage of the global economic opportunities.
Visiting richer countries under such conditions, instead of being empowering, often ends up as even more humiliating experience.
You have to be in their shoes to understand.
We in BG were there. We would visit a place and bring our own toilet paper and can food. [...]

Now when I go to Greece, I dive a nicer car than most Greeks, stay in hotels that most Greeks couldn't afford, and all that because I too belong to a world where only your own shortcomings will prevent you from achieving affluence and economic freedom.
Now that I visit Greece as an equal, quite frankly has improved my view of the Greeks - I used to dislike most of them... now, not that "I like them" as much as I don't think about that anymore - people like people.

As far as diasporas - strangely enough they suffer from the same isolation syndrome, but for different reasons. Most live in Canada, US and Australia - all very geographically isolated countries with innumerable minorities which can be devastatingly claustrophobic in itself, especially if one isn't willing to commingle.
Many use nationalism as a point of reference or an anchor in the turbulent strange world of small dark non-white people - believe me, I've been there too...

Valeri i agree 100%.But i have to say something.Bussines between Greeks and Fyromians are allready happening, many young Fyromians are here in Thessaloniki in the Univercities, many Greeks are in Fyroms univercities,in the summer this year the Fyromians hit the record of tourism in Greece,Greeks are going in Ohrid and in the Cazinos in Geugeli, but the thing is that the conection exsists allready. The people who are(i beleive majority)has good relationships, there is no nationalism and personally i have long distance relatives in Fyrom nd i know that the problem starts from the Diaspora.I just dont get it with this whole Visa thing honestly..I [...]

Visa guy,
Free travel is key.
In order to do ANY type of business, one has to be free to catch a plane and meet with people on a short notice. Otherwise you are at complete disadvantage and at the mercy of others at all times.
Better yet:
Young people need to be free to associate with other youth from around Europe - the only way for a sane future for all of us.
Isolation breeds nationalism, like that pathetic "Makedoniaism" we are all making fun of - you know [...]

Folks that dream that up, are hurt, feel humiliated, unloved and unwanted, so they need symbols of pride and revenge that all too often bring trouble for all the rest - not unlike Germany after WWI, only on a much smaller and miserable scale...

Happy days for the Macedonian people.
VETO? Why Greece has the right to put a VETO whenever they want?
Problems with the name/flag between Macedonia and Greece needs to be solved, but not to exceed those borders!
More over Greece needs to decide which name they want to use: Greece, Hellas, Macedonia, Mars...WTF.. How many names can one country have?

Anonymous Koinos Nous Tue, Dec 01 2009 13:44 CET

Oh dear, Greece missed a trick in not applying its sacred "VETO" to this one !!!!

(But at least Macedonia used its correct flag this time !)
