An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale was detected in Bulgaria's northeast region, about 430km from Sofia, Dnevnik daily reported on November 30 2009, citing information from the Seismologic Centre within the Geophysical Institute in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS).

Reportedly, the jolt occurred at 7.48am and it was felt particularly strongly in Kamen Bryag and the Kavarna Municipality, as well as Dobrich. The Bulgarian news agency (BTA) reported that the quake was felt more intensely in the upper storeys of apartment blocks in the town of Kavarna. To a lesser extent, the quake was also felt as far afield as Shabla.

About 1000 students from the Stefan Karadja and Yordan Yovkov schools in the region were evacuated and had to spend half an hour in the courtyard of the school. There are no reports of any structural damages or injuries from the quake to either schools or other buildings.
