Somali pirates seize Greek super tanker Maran Centauros

Marines from the Spanish frigate, Blas de Lezo, approach a suspected pirate skiff in the Gulf of Aden

A Greek super tanker travelling from Kuwait to the US with 28 crew members was seized by Somali pirates, off the eastern coast of Somalia, Dnevnik daily reported on November 30 2009, citing international media.

Maran Centauros, the latest Greek vessel to fall prey to the Somalis, has a crew consisting of nine Greek nationals, 16 Filipinos, two Ukrainians and one Romanian. According to initial media reports, the sailors have not been harmed.

"The vessel, owned by the Greek company Kristen Navigation, headed from Kuwait to the United States. The captain's aid said there were nine armed Somalis on board, and the vessel is heading towards Somalia's coast," the spokesman said, cited by Ria Novosti.

The captain of the Maran Centauros cargo vessel had contacted Greek coast guard authorities by telephone and told them that the vessel was boarded by nine armed pirates who then ordered the crew to steer the ship towards Somali waters.

According to the BBC, the ship weighs about 300,000 tonnes and is believed to be one of the largest yet captured by Somali pirates.
