Those institutions of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) that scored lowest in a recent Europen expert audit, would most probably face closure, head of BAS Nikola Subotinov said in an interview with Bulgarian National Radio.

The auditors had examined the viability and usefulness of the BAS institutions, Bulgarian daily Dnevnik. said.

The audit report was expected to be published on November 30 2009.

"The report will be an evaluation of the scientific research at BAS," Sudotinov said, adding he was confident in the quality of the work of scientists at BAS.

The last reform of BAS dates from the early 1990s, when around 45 per cent of its staff was laid off.

Inappropriate comment?

If the BAS is closing useless institutions, I wonder if it is considering giving Mr. Filipov and his team of head cases the axe. For the sake of scholastic credibility if not for the pathological and unverifiable claims they are making about contact with aliens.
