Hungary in grip of flu epidemic

Influenza infection has officially reached the level of an epidemic, the National Epidemiological Centre announced at a conference last week. More than 22 000 people reported to the doctor with flu symptoms in the week to Wednesday, up 30 per cent on the previous week, said Ágnes Csóhan. This is well past the threshold of 20 000 which qualifies as an epidemic in Hungary. One in three: A(H1N1)

Laboratory testing of 340 people revealed that one in three of those presenting with flu-like symptoms had contracted the new variant A(H1N1) virus known to the English speaking world as swine flu, Chief Medical Officer Ferenc Falus said. He said it was difficult to ascertain the true extent of infection, but estimated that some 30,000 Hungarians could be infected.Falus advised employers not to hold any pre-Christmas parties, as they could increase the spread of the new type A(H1N1) virus that causes swine flu. The government is urging people to get themselves inoculated.
