Two women victims of acid attack - police capture culprits

Two young women in the southwestern Bulgarian town of Blagoevgrad became victims of what appears to have been an unprovoked acid attack, the Interior Ministry said in a media statement on November 25 2009.

The two women, aged 24 and 26 and natives of the town of Gotse Delchev, were on their way home from a nightclub when they were confronted by an unknown man who sprayed them with acid. The exact acid solution is still unknown but specialists are working in a lab to determine its origin.

Following the attack, the initial distress signal was received by the First Police Station in Blagoevgrad and a police patrol car was dispatched to the scene of the crime.

The two women were taken to the emergency ward in a Blagoevgrad hospital. Reportedly, the condition of one of the victims was serious.

The police immediately launched a hunt for the perpetrator and eventually apprehended three men, aged 28-37 from Dupnitsa and the village of Yahinovo.

According to the police, all three of them were "accessories to the attack". The exact extent of their involvement was yet to be determined. All three were detained and a criminal case has been opened.
