Sixty per cent of respondents in a nationwide survey conducted by Open Society Institute Sofia NGO said they thought Bulgaria had seen the worst of the economic crisis, Bulgarian news agency BTA said on November 23 2009.

Results of the survey, conducted in October 2009, were presented by OSI head Georgi Stoichev.

Bulgarians' optimism and pessimism were based on political rather than economic factors, connected to the new Government taking office after the July 2009 elections.

The survey showed that 41 per cent of supporters of the ruling party GERB were optimistic about the economic future of the country. Only nine per cent of the supporters of the former ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party, now in opposition, felt that way.

Similarly, only 10 per cent of supporters of the other opposition party that was part of the previous ruling coalition, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, shared the same view.
