Kosovo’s governing coalition breaks up – reports

Kosovo could be set for a new president and other changes in top government posts amid reports that the governing Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK)-Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) is breaking up because of their battle in the country’s local government elections.
 
The PDK is led by Hashim Thaci, currently prime minister, and the LDK by Fatmir Sejdiu, currently president of Kosovo.
 
Kosovo went to the polls on November 15 2009 in the first local government elections since it declared independence unilaterally from Serbia in 2008. A number of the municipal contests are going to a second round.
 
Media in Kosovo said that in the early hours of November 20 2009, PDK deputy leader Hajredin Kuci said that that the PDK would "review" its coalition with the LDK.
 
This was because the LDK had violated the coalition agreement by competing with the PDK in the second-round contests.
 
RTV Kosova quoted sources as saying that there would be a new governing coalition of Behgjet Pacolli’s Alliance for Future Kosovo (AAK) and the Democratic Union of Dardania, with Pacolli as president of Kosovo and Nejat Daci as prime minister, Bulgarian news agency Focus said. Other reports said that Daci would be president of the Kosovo assembly.
 
It was expected that the LDK leadership would meet on November 20 to discuss the situation.
 
In recent days, Kosovo media have reported that various parties have been in discussions, with the PDK seeking new partners to the extent of detailed discussions on future cabinet posts.
 
The first round of local elections saw a significant upswing in support for the AAK. PDK support remained static and the LDK’s support went up slightly.
