White tigress slaughtered by lions

Two lions at Liberec Zoo in the northern Czech Republic killed a rare white tigress after entering her enclosure.

Workers were alerted by the cries of the 17-year-old tigress, Isabella, but were unable to prevent her slaughter.

White tigers find it difficult to survive in the wild because their colour offers them little camouflage.

The lions - Sultan, aged 14, and Elsa, 11 - apparently managed to open a trap door leading to an open-air area occupied by Isabella.

"The current security system has been in place for 12 years and such an accident has never happened before," said zoo director David Nejedlo, quoted by the BBC.

Three surviving white tigers still reside at the zoo, including Isabella's daughter. The zoo, the oldest in the Czech Republic, was established in 1919.
