The prosecuting magistracy has laid criminal charges against Nikolai Tsonev, who was defence minister in Bulgaria’s previous government, for an equipment purchase deal alleged to have lost the public purse 12.9 million leva, prosecutors in Sofia said on November 20 2009.

Tsonev is accused of failing in his duty as a cabinet minister and in his capacity as head of the defence ministry’s supply management.

According to prosecutors, Tsonev was responsible for agreeing to contracts involving supplies of metal products from US firm Mic Industries, with adverse consequences including the loss of 12.9 million leva and that spending made it impossible to go ahead with a revamp of two varieties of aircraft, rendering them useless to the country’s armed forces, which needed them for training.
