A total of 606 people have been sanctioned for smoking while on the train in Bulgaria since the beginning of the year, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Of the 606 passengers, 589 have been fined for not keeping train cars free from cigarette smoke, while the remaining 17 were taken off the trains after refusing to pay the 20 leva fine.

A complete ban on smoking inside train cars was introduced in March 2008.

I fail to see why providing a properly ventilated smoking compartment at the end of a train, is such a problem. By not providing this smokers are lighting up illegally and annoying others. Would it not be better to provide them with somewhere to go?
Bulgaria does not seem to have adopted the zero tolerance bully state approach to smokers that we unfortunately experience here in the UK thanks to our government.

Don't these people know they are destroying their health and that of those around them. There doesn't seem to be any real concern at the damage this filthy habit is doing.
