Bulgaria will receive 75 million euro from the 2010 European Union budget, part of the recently approved 300 million euro in further compensation for the early shutdown of two Soviet-made nuclear reactors at the Kozloduy power plant, the Government said in a statement.

The European Commission is expected to submit its proposal to the European Council, which has to approve the addendum of compensation payments, which in turn will have to be approved by the European Parliament.

Bulgaria also expects to receive funding from the 2010 EU budget for developing energy networks, an area on which the bloc plans to spend 1.08 billion euro next year.

Bulgaria was required to shut down four reactors at its Kozloduy power plant as a pre-condition to joining the EU on January 1 2007. According to the initial agreement, the country will have received 550 million euro in compensation by the end of 2009, but Bulgarian authorities have insisted from the start for more funds over a longer period of time.

The four reactors, with a combined installed capacity of 1760MW, were built between 1974 and 1982. The other two units at Kozloduy, at 1000MW each, remain in operation.
