Doctors drop plans for protests after meeting Prime Minister

Doctors have dropped protests planned for November 17 2009 as Parliament discusses the draft Budget 2010 after a meeting between the Bulgarian Medical Association (BMA) and Prime Minister BoIko Borissov a day earlier.

Borissov pledged to maintain the Budget allocation for hospitals for the first half of 2010.

"The idea is that the delegated budget of health care settings will stay but only if hospitals working with the state National Health Insurance Fund and providing quality services are financed by the state when they run out of resources," said BMA chief Tsvetan Raychinov.

Healthcare Minister Bozhidar Nanev announced the subsidies will be financed from alternative sources, without elaborating.

Doctors have come round to the view that an overhaul of the health care system is necessary and must be implemented. The criteria to sift out hospitals that will be converted into hospices should be completed by January 14 2010.

Borissov said that it was high time people realised that health care is not cheap or free. He said he had commissioned an analysis into whether Bulgarians spend more money on their health or their car.

"I’ve ordered a calculation of how much is it to open up your the bonnet of your Mercedes at the repair centre and open up your stomach," Borissov said.
