Employees of the Central Balkan National Park, together with experts from the Balkani Wildlife Association, armed an 81kg brown bear with a GPS-collar as part of research into the habitat of brown bears in Bulgaria, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

Data collected from the bear will be used to determine the size of individual territories of the animal and its preferred habitats, along with resting and winter-sleep areas.

The project's aim was to monitor brown bear populations and replicate the best practices to reduce conflict from the co-existence of predators with the local population.

The project will continue until April 2014 and was developed with European funding in four protected areas in Bulgaria, inn the Stara Planina, the Rila and the Pirin Mountains, BTA said.

The GPS system has been funded by the German federal fund for environmental protection and the Frankfurt Zoological Society.

The Central Balkan National Park, which was established in 1991 and lies in the Balkan mountain range, is home to many rare and endangered wildlife species, self-regulating ecosystems of biological diversity, as well as historical sites of cultural and scientific significance.
