Swiss photographer Doris Peter has a magnificent archive of black-and-white photos from Sofia dating back to 1990, currently on display in Sofia's Red House Centre for Culture and Debate, 15 Lyuben Karavelov Street.

The exhibition, which runs until November 29, is entitled Sofia In Broad Daylight 1990-2001 and is open from 3pm until 7pm Monday to Friday.

Peter first arrived in Sofia at the end of 1990 during a very difficult winter marked by empty shelves and food rationing. She immediately set about photographing people on the street as well as other sites around the city.

Throughout the 1990s Peter regularly returned to Sofia for extended periods. During these visits she chronicled Sofia's development through a very difficult decade, including the burgeoning signs of Bulgaria's new consumer capitalism.

Peter has also produced her first book of photographs, a book of the same name containing more than 200 photographs and opinions of contemporary witnesses. The exhibition features some of the photographs you can find in the book.

The book can be ordered through the following website: www.ulpi.com

You can read more about the work of Doris Peter in this Friday's Sofia Echo.
