Serbia begins official mourning for Patriarch Pavle

Serbia's president Boris Tadic, second left, pays his respects near the coffin of Serbian Patriarch Pavle at the main Saborna Crkva church in Belgrade, November 15 2009.

Serbia began three days of official mourning on November 16 2009 for Pavle, Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church, whose death was announced by the church the day before.

Pavle, who was 95, became the head of the church in 1990 but since 2007 had not been carrying out his duties because of severe ill-health. Metropolitan of Montenegro and Littoral Amfilohije, who had been standing in for Pavle, will continue to act as head of the church pending the formal election of a successor.

Serbian media reported that long queues formed at Belgrade’s Cathedral Church of St Michael the Archangel to pay tribute to Pavle, who will be buried at the country’s Rakovica Monastery on November 19.

Serbian state officials and representatives of the country’s Roman Catholic Church expressed their condolences. "There are people who bond entire nations and Pavle was such a person," Serbian president Boris Tadic said.

Pavle was born Gojko Stojčević in Slavonia on September 11 1914 and took orders as a monk in 1946, adopting the name Pavle. He became bishop of Raska-Prizren in 1957 and Patriarch on December 1 1990.

Notable highlights of his career included his supervision of the first official translation into Serbian of the New Testament in 1984, revised in 1990, as well as authorships of theological works and being a driving force in church restorations.

Pavle was adamant in opposing Kosovo’s independence from Serbia, saying after Kosovo’s February 2008 unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia, ""Kosovo is not only a question of territory, it is a question of our spiritual being".

Can't you people give a dead man and a mourning nation some peace for at least a week. Mr. Good Riddance, he would never trample on anyone's memory as you have.

There are distasteful, obscene and vulgar comments about the newly deceased Patriarch on this site.

Praise and invective alike can do hothing to affect the condition of anyone dead to the world, as he is; however, they truly reflect the quality of the person uttering them, and what sits in their heart.

Agron Forlani: How can you pray for somebody to go to hell if you are a Christan? I hope your father did not teach you that. May God forgive your ignorance because you do not know what you are saying too. And "we will have to explain every single word in front of God." God bless!

For the ignorant people on this site....I would like to say have some tact - but I realize that it is difficult for you to show tact and class - that is not a part of YOUR CULTURE. To think that your people have the audacity to call the serbs violent and angry - your posts speak for themselves and for "your people". Enough said.

The man was a snake. never broke from reinforcing the cultish quality of serbian orthodox pseudo christianity... the brainwashing that blends medieval Mythology with religion that formed the motivation for madness serbs spread across the balkans across all religious and ethnic lines.

He Approved of EVERY single violent and insane action perpetrated by nationalists serbs on all their neighbors. Feigned ignorance as it occurred, yet was politically savvy and AWARE enough to quickly have to be the first to come out with a condescending apology and feigned "shock"... again, and again, and again. the moment these violent nationalist ventures met with Failure.

He was no man of god, no man of peace. He is easily replaced.

rampant nationalists full of hate and bile are still a dime a dozen in serbia.

Agron, he was a follower of Christ and Christ will welcome him to heaven. You on the other hand, the one who spews so much hate and venom just because he was a Serb is not likely to be welcomed there, but then again, you are obviously not a follower of Christ.

Could your prejudice against Serbs be any more obvious? Even a man like patriarch Pavle is evil as far as you are concerned if he happens to be a Serb.

Seek help and forgiveness now. Your soul is in danger.
