Bulgaria will apply for a country code top-level domain (ccTLD) in non-Latin script, the Transport Ministry has announced in a media statement.

If the request is granted, Bulgarian internet domains could be written entirely in Cyrillic.

The registrar that would handle domain registration for the future top-domain level was to be appointed by the Government, the ministry said.

The decision for the application came after the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) decided in late October 2009 that it would allow country code top-level domains in non-Latin scripts.

The application process for non-Latin top-level domains was to start on November 16 2009.

Bulgaria was among the first countries to declare its interest in obtaining a top-level domain in Cyrillic, when, in an official letter to ICANN in June 2008, the Bulgarian Government indicated its interest in a .бг domain.

Whether or not it would now be able to get that top-level domain depends on technical requirements that were not yet known in 2008, the ministry said.

Responding to a recent discussion and poll, started by current country top-level domain registrar Register-BG, the ministry said private discussions and polls would have no influence on its decision.

Good to see that Bulgaria will join the ICANN fast track queue. ICANN´s approval of non-latin domains is a great step towards internazionalization. I believe that the new Cyrillic .bg will be bigger than .bg. It will surely depend of how willing that the local government will be to remove restrictions and remove costs.
