CCTV surveillance systems and protective fencing will be installed around railway installations in urban areas to protect the trains and facilities. These will be put in place in areas that are prone to "frequent attacks", Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said on November 13, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

A special joint task force by transport and interior ministries will curb vandalism and destruction of equipment, Tsvetanov said. There would be increased police presence in "risk areas" and round the clock police patrols, which will keep vigil around installations that have been frequently vandalised.

In 2008, the Bulgarian state railways BDZ have reported that trains had to be stopped 13 times because of emergency situations, whereas attacks on property and equipment were more frequent.

Tsvetanov blamed the attacks on the "low social status of the residents in the areas where attacks occur", an indirect allusion at the public perception in Bulgaria that most attacks are either in Roma neighbourhoods or carried out by Roma.

Since 2008, the situation became worse because legislative changes made 300 police officers redundant, while a further 45 police officers were given other tasks.

Tsvetanov did not disclose the total cost of the CCTV equipment to be installed and the amount of personnel that will be re-directed for transport protection.
