Two MPs from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party, now in opposition, voluntarily gave up their MPs' immunity from prosecution following a request by Prosecutor-General Boris Velchev.

Gyunai Sefer and Mithat Tabakov are the first MRF members to face investigation and possible charges.

Sefer is being investigated over document fraud while Tabakov is being probed for malfeasance in office from the days when he was mayor of the small Doulovo town. Sefer used to be municipal councillor in Doulovo.

Both were not present in Parliament on November 13 2009 when MPs were due to discuss Velchev's request. After MRF's deputy chairperson Lyutvi Mestan said that Sefer and Tabakov were ready to give up their immunity, there was no need for a voting procedure.

Velchev has already asked Parliament to strip the immunity from prosecution of former prime minister Sergei Stanishev and Emilia Maslarova, former social and labour policy minister in Stanishev's Cabinet.

Stanishev is leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party of which Maslarova is also a member. Both voluntarily gave up their immunity following Velchev's requests.
