The final hurdle for the European Union’s Constitution was cleared when Czech President Vaclav Klaus reluctantly signed the Lisbon Treaty last Wednesday. All the EU member states have now ratified the treaty, which will enter into force on 1 December.

Klaus’s subsequent statement was critical of the Czech Constitutional Court – which gave the final approval for signing the document – for making a unbalanced decision to protect the Lisbon Treaty, rather than providing a neutral legal analysis. "Once the treaty comes into force the Czech Republic will cease to exist as a sovereign nation," the Czech President declared.
