Bulgaria will face UEFA Cup holders Shakhtar Donetsk in friendly

The Bulgarian national team will face Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on November 11, 2009 the Bulgarian Football Union (BFU) said in a press statement on their website.

This came shortly after it was revealed in Bulgarian media that no other national football association had apparently accepted the invitation from the BFU for a friendly.

Previously, Bulgaria was staged to draw swords in a friendly encounter against Bolivia, but the South Americans eventually declined the invitation to Sofia, claiming "financial constrictions". Before that, Bulgaria had attempted to secure a date with Northern Ireland, but that, too, collapsed.

The friendly match between Bulgaria and the UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar Donetsk will be held at the Kemal Ataturk Stadium in the Turkish resort city city of Antalya, the BFU statement says.

Aston Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov has joined his Bulgarian teammates on November 11 in the preparation for the clash with the UEFA Cup holders. He is recovering from an Achilles strain, and was subjected to special treatment in Birmingham – accordingly, Stanimir Stoilov, Bulgaria's national coach, has said that in light of his condition, Petrov's health will not be risked against Donetsk.

Petrov will remain in the camp, however, and he is likely to play in Bulgaria's second friendly against Malta, scheduled for November 18.
