Armed robbery at a Societe Generale Expressbank branch in southeast Bulgaria

Armed robbers attacked a branch of Societe Generale Expressbank on Tsar Simeon Boulevard in Stara Zagora, southeastern Bulgaria on November 9 2009, Dnevnik daily reported.

A distress signal was sent to the police shortly before 9am after which units were dispatched to the bank immediately. The entire perimeter around the bank had been cordoned off by police.

Reportedly, the robbers broke into the vault and allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of money before escaping. Authorities have not disclosed how many robbers were involved in the operation, nor the amount of money stolen.

Meanwhile, in a separate attack, an attempted robbery at a bank in the village of Novo Delchevo at 5am on November 9 was unsuccessful.

Police were tipped off by a witness who noted "men dismounting from a van and heading straight for the bank". However, as the van manoeuvred in position in the courtyard just outside the bank, the alarm systems were activated and the men swiftly left the scene, Dnevnik quoting eyewitness reports as saying.

Upon arrival, the police noticed that the front door of the establishment had been breeched, but apart from material damages, no money has been stolen.
