Traffic police KAT has announced that the road situation across the country was precarious because of wet road conditions and reduced visibility, requesting that all drivers remain alert and drive responsibly, Dnevnik daily reported on November 9 2009.

Visibility around the Shipka Pass in Stara Planina was down to 30m, whereas in the regions around Turgovishte, Haskovo, Topolovgrad, and Pazardjik, visibility was between 100 and 150m. Lorries carrying more than 10 tons of cargo would not be allowed through the Shipka pass until March 30 2010, and the Petrohan Pass. The road between Shipka and Buzludja was also closed.

Traffic along the Trakia motorway on 63km en route to Sofia was redirected along the extreme left lane only, because part of the motorway had collapsed, Dnevnik daily reported. The entire area has been cordoned off with signs and speed has been reduced as repair works got underway.

Furthermore, drivers would have to be aware of a danger of landslides along the Troyan-Kurnare section, municipality of Smolyan, as well as on the Sofia-Samokov road, Assenovgrad-Smolyan, Krichim-Devin, Mezdra-Botevgrad. The Tvurditsa - Elena and Etropole - Zlatitsa passes were also closed to all traffic.
