Levski Sofia suffered a last-minute home defeat in their Uefa Europa League group G match against Red Bull Salzburg late on November 5 2009. A fourth loss out of four matches came off the back of a strong performance from an unlikely Franz Scheiner goal late in injury time.

The match was a lively encounter from kickoff, with the visitors making an attempt on target in the very first minute, but Blues goalkeeper Georgi Petkov was alert and kept his net clean. Several minutes later in yet another attack by the Austrian side, the visitors struck the woodwork.

Levski then regrouped and surged forward, and after exerting pressure on the Red Bull goal for several minutes, Darko Tasevski found the net, but the goal was disallowed for being offside.

The Bulgarian side displayed passion and determination rarely seen on the pitch this season, and as the second half unfolded, the home support could have been forgiven for believing that the Blues could actually go on and win the match.

The hosts suffered a major setback in the 62nd minute, however, when Georgi Surmov was given his marching orders, leaving his teammates to battle it out to the end with 10 men on the pitch. Surmov was left with no alternative but to commit a professional foul on Dusan Svento after the Red Bull player had beaten the Levski keeper and was clear on goal.

In spite of the gap in the ranks, the Bulgarian side continued to play with the same passion and maintained their composure on the pitch. Even then Levski Sofia attempted surges forward and as the match neared its end, the home support were ready to accept a draw and the team's first point in group G.

It was not meant to be, however, and with this latest defeat, Levski Sofia are finally out of contention for the later stages of the tournament.
