Influenza update: sixth death in Bulgaria, Sofia schools face suspended classes

Swine flu claimed the sixth death in Bulgaria. The deceased, whose name or age have not been disclosed, succumbed to the strain, which was "severely exacerbated by other ailments and the fact that the patient had opted for self-administered treatment rather than seek professional help", Angel Kounchev, head of the contagious diseases department of the Health Ministry, told Bulgarian National Television on November 6 2009.

Kounchev said that there are no vaccines available, but deliveries were expected from Sweden and Germany, he told BNT's morning talk show. Once the vaccines are delivered, children, pregnant women and doctors will be given priority treatment, he said.

Kounchev advised everyone to get "jabbed against the seasonal flu just for a good measure" and that currently the only available anti-flu drugs were Tamiflu and Relenza.

Health Minister Bozhidar Nanev told BNT that schools in Sofia were expected to be closed for an emergency break. Currently, 48 schools in the Bulgarian capital have suspended classes because as many as 30 per cent of their students were ill.

Nanev said that the influenza strain in the country was not a seasonal flu, but indeed the new H1N1 strain, or swine flu. More than 100 000 Bulgarians were down with the strain.

The Bulgarian government has requested the urgent delivery of 200 000 anti-viral drugs from the European Union because the country was caught unprepared for the pandemic, the blame for which was attributed to the former Socialist-led government, which failed to order the jabs months ago like most other countries.
