Mountain Rescue Patrol search for disappeared hiker in central Stara Planina

A hiker has disappeared near Hija Rai (Lodge Paradise) in the Central Balkan mountain range, Bulgarian National Television reported on November 5 2009.

The 24-year-old, a native of Stara Zagora in southeast Bulgaria, vanished near the lodge yesterday and has been unaccounted for since, the Bulgarian Mountain Rescue Service was quoted as saying.

A rescue operation was launched to find the man; currently there are 11 mountain rangers and a dog employed in the task, BNT said.

Conditions for mountaineering are unfavourable and adequate equipment and precautions are essential. Serene skies are constantly giving way to cloud cover and fog, while fluctuating temperatures mean that accumulated snow cover is melting, making mountain trails soggy and treacherous.

Weather conditions are in constant flux with quiet spells followed by sustained wind. To obtain further information on a particular mountain, you may contact the Mountain Rescue Service at www.pss.bglink.net or call 02/ 963 20 00 and 0881470
