Influenza update as another Bulgarian town is overrun

The industrial town of Pernik, about 30km west of Sofia, is the latest town in Bulgaria to shut its schools for a week, beginning on November 4 2009, Bulgarian National Television said on November 4.

Concurrently, in the northern Bulgarian town of Lovech, medical authorities report that the number of people falling victim to "sharp respiratory disease" has reached 274 for every 10 000, or well above the 180 threshold. The municipalities of Nikopol, Samokov, Varna, Stara Zagora, Gabrovo, Bourgas and Silistra have also declared pandemic state of emergency.

Pernik authorities have announced that the rate of infection has reached 200 for every 10 000 people, hence it was also imperative to declare red alert.

Sofia is yet to declare a state of pandemic although the rate of people falling ill with influenza is constantly rising, and the capital city is expected to do so next week. Currently, 28 schools in Sofia are in the process of closing.

Meanwhile, south of the border in Greece, a 34-year-old paraplegic man was the latest to succumb to the H1N1 strain, the Greek Kathimerini reported on November 3 2009.

The Greek health operations centre confirmed yesterday that the man died of multiple organ failure. A mass inoculation programme to protect Greek citizens against the virus is expected to begin in a couple of weeks.
