Sofia City Court has postponed the trial against Australian Paul "Jock" Palfreeman until November 9 2009.

The Court postponed the trial after four experts, who are drawing up detailed reports on the case, requested more time.

Palfreeman, 22, is charged with the murder of law student Andrei Monov after a street brawl in Sofia at the end of 2007. He has also been charged with attempted murder over the alleged stabbing of a 19-year-old during the fight.

Palfreeman, from Sydney, denies both charges and says he was trying to defend himself from a group of men when he intervened after seeing them attack a group of Roma.

At the beginning of last year Sofia City Court rejected Palfreeman's bail plea after the judge ruled that Palfreeman was aggressive and could attempt to flee court proceedings. The case has been repeatedly postponed ever since.

Earlier this year, a controversial Australian documentary, entitled One Night in Sofia, questioned events surrounding Monov's death and Palfreeman's ensuing prosecution.

The programme also featured prominently Palfreeman's father, Dr Simon Palfreeman, an Australian pathologist. The defence has demanded that Dr Palfreeman serve as his lawyer in the case.

1. The experts did not ask for more time. They just did not turn up. The have been subpoened again with a threat of a fine.
2. You mention the original bail judge calling him aggressive but have not mentioned the detailed psychological report subsequently presented in court that states he is not of an aggressive nature
3 The postponments have been predominately because witnesses do not turn up and also when for 5 months a member of the judge's panel went overseas!!
4 It is common practice in Bulgaria for [...]

Read the full comment a close family member to be appointed to the defence team. There was no 'demand'
5 Why has there been no discussion on why the system allows one of the group of boys who was involved in the fighting to be represented as a civil claimant giving him the right to block vital evidence that is in the defendant's favour (despite the very obvious conflict of interest, he is asking for 50000 lev !!!
