President Georgi Purvanov has arrived in Australia in the first visit by a Bulgarian head of state to Australia.

Purvanov arrived in Canberra after a state visit to South Korea. Purvanov is due to meet members of Australia's Bulgarian community in Australia, which totals more than 12 000.

Purvanov will lay a wreath of flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier at the Australian War Memorial, and will plant a tree at the Canberra International Botanic Gardens.

On the last day of the visit, the President will meet prime minister Kevin Rudd. Later on, in Sydney, Purvanov will meet New South Wales governor Marie Bashir.

Bulgaria and Australia established diplomatic relations in April 1972. Last year, more than 13 000 Australian tourists visited Bulgaria, a 24.9 per cent increase on 2007.

Purvanov's delegation includes Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Traicho Traikov, Culture Minister Vezhdi Rashidov, Plamen Nounev MP, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov's Chef de Cabinet Roumyana Buchvarova and Deputy Foreign Minister Marin Raikov.
