The tip-off police received about the release of kidnapped university student Roumen Gouninski in an area outside Sofia was probably false, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told Bulgaria Focus news agency.

Police did receive information about Gouninski's release but when they checked the site he was not there. "At this current moment in time it's all fake," Tsvetanov said.

Police were still searching the area, called Kiliite, where Gouninski was supposed to have been released by kidnappers, he said. He refused to confirm speculation that the kidnappers had contacted the father of the student to demand a ransom.

Gouninski was abducted on October 19 2009 while walking his dog in Sofia's Studentski Grad borough and has been missing ever since.
