Bulgarian Defence Minister Nikolai Mladenov has outlined some of his plans to change the country's defence legislation.

Mladenov was speaking on October 27 2009 on Bulgarian National Television's (BNT) breakfast show.

The amendments emphasise the need to make agencies within the Defence Ministry more efficient, to implement effective anti-corruption measures, spend money more efficiently and to improve career opportunities and development throughout the armed forces.

Bulgaria is set to launch a long term co-operation partnership with the United Kingdom to tackle corruption in Bulgaria's armed forces.

"The importance is for conditions to be established so that people can work properly and effectively, because under the current system, chaos and widespread problems reign supreme," he told BNT.

"The amendments will be put to the Cabinet at the beginning of November, and tabled in Parliament by mid_November, and by the end of the year they will have to be implemented," Mladenov said.

He said that he wanted those who had squandered the ministry's resources to be pursued by prosecutors. Those who had wasted defence budget money should be held accountable for their actions and for harming Bulgaria's national interest and that of its armed forces.
