Sofia holds its 27th annual marathon on October 25 and everyone is welcome to try their luck on the 26km route, from professional athletes such as the Bulgarian national team through to foreign runners and amateurs.

The event has proven a perennially popular event in the Balkan sporting calendar with many Bulgarian athletes relying on the prize money to support their training between competitions. Other prefer to just run for fun.

Sofia’s streets will be closed to traffic from 10am on October 25 when the marathon will kick off in front of Vassil Levski national stadium. In previous years, Sofia City Hall, one of the main forces behind the marathon, managed to attract sponsors and prizes such as brand new motor vehicles.

Organisers this year have managed to lure the United Bulgarian Bank as the main sponsor as well as Nike sportswear company, enabling the event to keep the same amount of prize money as last year.

This means that winners in different disciplines will share prize money of 21 000 leva and other winnings worth 20 000 leva. The winner will get 2000 leva and a 500-leva bonus from Nike. Amateur runners can sign up for alternative distances of 8.5km and 3.5km.

Registration takes place at the Evrofutbol coffee shop, just to the left of the central entrance to Vassil Levski national stadium from October 22 until the morning of October 25. Everyone else can simply hope for nice weather and enjoy the event.
